What we do

Karate - Empty hand techniques of traditional karate, punching, kicking, blocking. We cover both the Shorin Ryu style and the Goju Ryu style

Goshin Jutsu – the translation means techniques of self defence. We teach students to take the learning from traditional karate and jujutsu and incorporate it effectively into modern day self defence.

Kobudo - the art of traditional weapons. These are usually Okinawan implements. We learn the most effective way of using these and the katas that go with them. Weapons include Bo, Sai, Tonfa, Nunchaka, Kama, Eiku Bo and Nunte Bo.

Iaijutsu - the Japanese sword. Sword forms and paired exercises, including live "cutting" of targets.

Kata - sequences of blocks, strikes, locks and holds against an imaginary attacker. Many of these katas are very old, without written records of the Shorin Ryu or Goju Ryu style. The only way they are prevented from being lost over time is by their accurate dissemination from sensei to student.

Jujutsu & Aikijutsu – these are traditional Japanese martial arts practiced for hundreds of years and are the basis for modern day Aikido and modern Judo.  Jujutsu and Aiki Jutsu focus on locks, throws and holds for restraint. They concentrate on unarmed methods of dealing with attacks from armed adversaries when one has lost their primary weapons. Due to the ineffective nature of striking against armed and armoured adversaries, most jujutsu techniques rely on grappling, throwing and joint manipulation. By moving in harmony with an opponent and diverting his/her energy you can unbalance and ‘defeat’ them without using strength or undue force.

Sport Jujitsu kumite and WKF kumite - Sports Jujitsu involves kicks, punches, blocks and take downs. Once on the floor combatants have 10 seconds to submit their opponent. WKF kumite has similar moves but without take downs although sweeps are allowed. They differ in scoring and target areas.
