Questions

What Should I Expect on the First Session?

The first session can be a little bit nerve-wracking for some people. Expect to feel a little bit silly at first, waving your arms around and standing in funny positions is not something we are all used to doing. However with practice you will soon feel more and more natural. Fitness is another aspect that some people worry about. As a beginner you may feel physically challenged at times, but you will never be asked to do anything that’s outside your ability. You will be amazed at how quickly your fitness builds up and your stamina improves. Also, it is important to remember that you are never too old to start Karate! Though you may not have the flexibility, speed or fitness you had when you were younger, it is never too late to start training.

On your first session we ask that you wear something loose that you can easily move around in. Jogging bottoms with a light T-shirt are ideal. Once you decide if you are interested in Karate you may purchase a ‘Gi’ which is the white Karate uniform you may have seen. Don’t worry about footwear, in Karate you go barefoot. Although some people may wear trainers for running!

Your first session will start with a small demonstration so you know what to expect. Then you will have a taster lesson and start to learn some basic Karate. We hope you have a fantastic first session!

Is it aggressive and will I feel overwhelmed ?

The emphasis is always on self control, restraint, discipline, confidence and holistic well-being. We find that everyone will discover a bit of Dentokan which is their niche, whether it's self defence, ancient arts, meditation, cardio-vascular activity, building core strength, or just good club and team spirit

Grades

When you reach a level to grade you can test to gain a coloured belt. This is the order of the Student (kyu) grades you can achieve:

What does Hyodokan mean?

Hyodokan is our club name and it literally translates to ‘Hall of the Ice Cave.’ It is also a play on words as it is very similar to the famous judo dojo, the ‘Kodokan’. The dojo was dubbed an ‘Ice Cave’ before we had a matted floor and in winter our feet froze! Its other translation is "Hall of the Martial Way" which is a little bit more serious...

How fit do I need to be?

No previous fitness level is required! As long as you are enthusiastic and willing to try your best, you should have no problem keeping up.

How long does it take to get a black belt?

The amount of time it takes to get a black belt depends entirely on you. Everyone learns at different rates and it is important to remember that a black belt is only the beginning of your journey in martial arts.

Can I also join other clubs?
