We are all dedicated martial artists, who want to give people the same opportunities we have had, to learn martial arts and develop through this. Our approach is based on teaching at an individual level, not as a mass-market product. We are not a commercial club and we take no money ourselves. We are also very fortunate that we can call upon some of the world's leading martial artists to help to teach in our dojo.
I have been passionately fond of sports and physical exercise all my life. As a youngster I played football and cricket competitively, and after graduating taught PE before joining the Army. I was introduced to the principles of unarmed combat and Martial Arts, and instructed as part of my role.
Whilst I left the Army behind many years ago, I retained a fascination with Martial Arts. I discovered Dentokan, and have found that it offers a rich variety of elements, from ancient and traditional Okinawan techniques through to modern self-defence methods and everything in between.
I am keen to develop my knowledge in all areas, and my current passion is developing my understanding and knowledge of traditional weapons as a student of Roy Hobbs, Hanshi.
My aim is to provide a place where everyone can find something to interest them, and support them as they learn new skills and begin their journey in the Martial Arts.
Martial Arts captured my imagination right from the start. I started to learn Judo at 8 years old, and moved on to karate 3 years later. I find Karate intellectually interesting, powerful and graceful, and most of all, fun.
My favourite elements are the traditional kata, and developing my skills with weapons. I am particularly interested in the Japanese sword.
An important part of learning Karate involves teaching others and I am happy to share my skills whilst developing my own further.
Growing up I was always doing something. I knew about judo, and had a crush on the Karate Kid, but didn't have much time outside dancing, horse-riding, gymnastics and customising my clothes. Now, of course, I wish I had started training in martial arts much earlier! However, I am thankful for bearing (dance), flexibility (gym) and learning how to fall (horses).
Karate is a very key part of my life now, and is much more than I suspected it would be. Initially it felt great to be learning something completely new in my thirties. As time went on I discovered the deep respect of others that karate engenders, the art and philosophy, generosity of experienced practioners, and the challenges of competing, teaching and grading.
Like Anna, I appreciate the traditional kata, and also love sparring, or sport karate. I am very interested in theories, thoughts, philosophy and application - so come and have a chat :)
